The Role of Self Respect - Part Three
We want to help our businesses
It must be obvious to us that in order to help our business, we need to be much more like the selfless person as described in part two of this series of articles on self respect, and much less like either the “blowhard” or the “victim.
While both the “blowhard” and the “victim” are in a vicious cycle that is in danger of repeating and feeding on itself, the selfless person tends to be in a positive cycle, where the rewards that come back from others regarding their actions provides more than enough “fuel” (i.e. validation of their healthy level of self-respect) to maintain the positive cycle.
It is important to note not only that the selfless person is not a saint, but also that it is possible to improve the outlook of the “blowhard” and the “victim” steadily over time.
We sometimes fail to realise that in order to help others, we must help ourselves
It must now be obvious, that in order to help our family, our business, and others, we must 1st be able to help ourselves.
It is critical to realise that the ability to help yourself on an ongoing basis is not selfishness – in fact, it is really the ultimate selfless act, as long as the resources that come from helping oneself are reinvested in helping others. For most of us, helping “others” has a batting order, or a natural priority, which usually unpacks as follows:
And so how do we help ourselves?

- Helping our business (for some of us, our business IS our family!)
- Helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves
And so how do we help ourselves?
